Access Control Level governs the permissions that are associated with the individual User levels. There are six User Groups/levels within Joomla!

Front End Access (4 levels):

  1. Registered
  2. Author
  3. EditorĀ 
  4. Publisher
Author Members of this group can post and modify only their OWN articles. Their articles can be setup to be moderated by an administrator to clear the content before it is published. They can also set the date an article should be published.
Editor Members of this group inherit the privileges of the Author group. In addition an editor also has the ability to edit other contributor's content.
Publisher Members of this group inherit the privileges of the Editor group. In addition a Publisher also has the ability to publish or unpublish content on the site.

Administrator Back-End Access (3 levels):

  1. Manager
  2. Administrator
  3. Super Administrator.
Manager This group has the lowest authority in the administrative hierachy. Capabilities include:
  • Confirm User Registration
  • Catergorize Articles
  • Manage Sections & Catergories
Administrator Members of this group inherit all the privileges of the Manager group and also have the following privileges.
  • Install & uninstall extensions to Joomla
  • Change the selected template
  • Change the layout of a page
  • Modify permissions of users lower than them
Super Administrator The Super Administrator is the king of the website.

In addition to the registered User Groups listed above there is a Public (unregistered) or Guest, level.

if author / editor / publisher are locked out of the back end, where do they access the ui to contribute?
